Poems to Sea Bye

Poetry by Ama Maynu, An African American Poet and Writer of Southern Descent

No, Ama Maynu is not my real name.

It is a name bestowed upon me during my year-long tour in the Motherland.

Ama Maynu means "3rd child, Saturday born", or so says the tribesman in Ghana, West Africa.

And I proudly bear the name since I hail from a large family. My mom birthed eight children, six sons, two daughters (or was it six daughters, two sons? No matter...there were eight altogether).

I am the third born.

I am the one who roams.

I am the one running,

Aways, it seems, running for my life.

In my years -- well nigh half a century now -- I have had the privilege of living and serving my faith on three continents. In addition to Africa, I have lived in the Middle East, and in the north and southeastern sections of the US of A.

Recently I ventured out from the east coast to see what the west coast was like. I can tell you that the beaches of Southern California are the bomb.

I love it here.

Why would anyone live anywhere else in the world?

I may have to stop runnin' now.

Oh, What ...  about me?

No, I am not a writer by profession, though I have written professionally.

No, I am not a poet by craft, though I do craft poetry.

Most of what you will see on this site are poems I have written since moving by the Pacific Ocean (March 2007). These are from my Poems to Sea Bye collection. These poems are all in rough stages of drafting so no need for you to try to clean them up. If you do, you may find yourself banned permanently from this site. So try to chill. Just relax.

Other poems which I might include will be from my college years or from various periodicals whose editors were gracious enough to recognize talent and publish my stuff. You know, tell the rest of the world about it :)-

Yeah, I used to be shy. I think I've outgrown it.

You're invited to come back from time to time now that my creative juices are flowing again. There's bound to be more.
